ALSÓÖRS AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

Alsóörs, built on the side of the Somlyó hill, with its typical Permian red sandstone buildings, has a special atmosphere. The history of the local wine industry dates back to the Middle Ages, and fishing has been part of the culture of the village ever since. One of the most beautiful lookout towers in the Balaton area, the stone-built Csere Hill lookout tower, built on the 293-metre-high Csere Hill, offers views of Veszprém, Fejér and Somogy counties. The Királykúti Valley is also a popular hiking spot in the area. The building known as the Turkish House in Alsóörs is Hungary's oldest Gothic noble manor house. It dates back to the 15th century, with a wide semicircular late Gothic doorway with carved stone doorframe. It was called the house of the Turkish tax collector because its chimney resembles a turbaned head.

THE BEAUTY OF BALATON-FELVIDÉK

There are several museums to choose from in Balatonfüred, such as the Vaszary Gallery, the Museum of Sailing History and the Bodorka Visitor Centre. For literature fans, the former villa of Mór Jókai, now a memorial museum, is recomanded. It's also worth visiting one of the peaks of Tihany, the Apáti Hill, where you can enjoy a wonderful view from several points. The Szentbékkálla Stone Sea, a magnificent natural formation of the Káli-medence is an unmissable experience.

HIKING TRAILS FOR ACTIVE VISITORS

A visit to Halom Hill in Mentshely takes you inside an extinct volcano, tracing half a billion years of Earth's history on the Volcano Trail. At Lake Balaton, you should walk around the lookouts to admire the beauty of the water and the surroundings from as many places as possible. In addition to the Csere Hill and Sólyom Hill lookout points, you can also easily reach the Csákány Hill lookout point in Csopak and the Jókai Lookout in Fured from Alsóörs, while in the other direction you can see the lake from the Balatonfűzfő lookout point.

HISTORY AND FUN IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD – SIGHTS IN VESZPRÉM

From Alsóörs you can visit Veszprém, which has many exciting sights to offer thanks to its history and culture. The popular Veszprém Zoo is Hungary's third zoo. The St Michael's Basilica and the Gizella Chapel are perhaps the best known attractions in the city, but there are also several smaller churches to visit. One of the symbols of Veszprém is the 48-metre-high Fire Tower, with its spiral staircases offering unforgettable views.
